Lunchpackeatingtune (matpakkespisevisa)

Matpakke - Lunchpack. Often wrapped in paper, small plastic bag or lunchbox (se text below for info on matpakke content).

People from other countries seem fascinated by the Norwegian matpakke. Here is a loose translation of a beloved Norwegian song on this phenomenon, 'matpakkespisevisa' (lunchpackeatingtune).

'Lunchpackeatingtune
It isn’t fun to eat your food
When it is in a pack and not on a plate
The first slice of bread was with jam
It was stuck on the paper that flew with the wind

Then I was going to start with nr two
But it was eaten before because it was so good
The third slice was in two pieces
When one piece was eaten, the other had fallen down.

The forth was with mayonnaise and tomato.
The mayonnaise was squized out, the tomato was flat
The cheese on the last slice of bread
Was stuck under the last slice that I had eaten.

No it isn’t fun to eat your food
When it is in a pack and not on a plate.'

Many Norwegians have traumatic matpakke experience from school. After many years of ambivalence, I am back on the matpakketrack, and pride myself in making good matpakke inside lunchboxes. Does and dont's for matpakke are welcome in the comments section.

First of all: I take pride in my matpakker! As a houswife, I do my duty and make nice matpakker for my (soon to be) husband every day. It's a necessity really, because he makes really crappy matpakker. He just cuts of a couple of slices of bread (too thick slices I might add), puts on leverpostei or something and just sticks the two slices together. Hideous!

So here are my rules for a good matpakke:
1: Make the slices of bread just the rigt size. Not too thick, not too thin.
2: Use mellomleggspapir (whatever that is in english...).
3: Never ever put marmelade or jam in your matpakke. Rookie mistake.
4: Stay clear of Nugatti etc, and white bread. It just gets sticky, and besides, it's not that healthy either. (Who died and made me president of the WHO btw?)
5: If you absolutely must have cucumber, pepper, tomatoe etc, wrap them in little pieces of clingfilm. Ohterwise the moisture will leak out and destroy all surrounding breadtissue.
6: Wrapping is everything! I prefer a good old tupperwear box. My envorinmental karma goes down a notch or two every time i use disposable matpakkepapir. (Who died and made me Greenpeace?) If tupperware is out of the question, i prefer plastic ziplock bags. Reusable, of course. I'm working on teaching Martin environmental awareness in connection mith matpakker.
7: A box of youghurt or a piece of fruit makes i nice finishing toutch. See point 4 re:healthy. You can actually get banana-shaped lunchboxes these days, so your banana won't get nasty brown spots.

Jeez, I really have a lot of opinions on this, don't I?

Hear hear! Just a few years ago and this comment from Cilipia would have been a bit less probable:D

One trick i often use is putting cheeze on freezed slizes of bread, -makes the cheeze and bread stay fresh all day:D

I have a Barnas Turforening matboks (box made for lunchpacks). With small holes for letting some air slip in. Makes the cheeze stay unsweaty the whole day.

I'm learning and learning!
Well Grompia is my example... and she answers all my questions. Yes I'm a southern that adopted (amazed) the matpakke tradition.
And I even started to make the bread (wasn't it good Grompia?).
So, I'll keep in mind your suggestions.
I like proud norwegians! I like a lot less those who say that norwegian food isn't good, etc. That's not true!
Hurra for the matpakke! ; )

The background for my posting the matpakkespisevise, is that Venusia has adopted the matpakke tradition to such an extent that I am almost a bit scared. One day, I saw with my own eyes that she ate her matpakke from the day before. It was bread with white cheeze, and as you can imagine, the cheeze was all sweaty.

From then I have seen the importance of spreading the word on how to make the matpakke better for those who strive to adjust to our culture, and who have started with matpakke as a part of this process.

We need to show that there are ways of adjusting to the matpakke tradition that do not nessersarily involve self-torture. Even though most Norwegians have been trough the traumatic parts of matpakke when we were in school, people who come here should have the chance to learn how to avoid our mistakes.

Ps: The bread was great, and I am impressed by the way you are adapting into the Norwegian food traditions, Venusia! There is however no mistaking that we Norwegians, and perhaps particularly me, have a lot to learn from Italians, and particularly you, when it comes to cooking.

Anyway may "day after" matpakke was still good! : I

Probably because under the chees, some delicious olive oil (home made) was hidding.

one day we have to make a norwegian-italian dinner together!

Obviously we Norwegians have a lot to learn from Venusia when it comes to matpakke:D

I vote in favour of Norwegian-Italian dinner.

I have to say I'm impressed by the italian adopting norwegian matakke-customs! I especially liked the homemade olive oil on the bread-trick. And Grompia's cheese on frozen bread-trick. Fabulous! Besides being a mighty fine blog, one can actually learn lots of nice stuff here as well. Yeay!

P.S: Still no baby? This bet is turning out to be a travesty.
